New Year's resolutions

31/12/2019

I don’t like setting New Year’s resolutions because I feel that the exercise is too strict to be productive. New Year’s resolutions place unnecessary pressure to hold a single goal steady from the first day of the year to the last. Because of this, when a New Year’s resolution fails, the rest of the year is turned into a write off. In reality, goals can be revised and changed, and this is not something to be ashamed of.
Many resolutions are also made simply because it’s conventional to create them at the start of the year. As a result, these resolutions are often half-hearted aspirations. People also expect the advent of a new year to change them, like there is a great spark that lands on the 1st of January that makes everybody different. This only emphasises the fall when resolutions are not met, and many realise that they are the same person as they were on the 31st of December. The idea of New Year’s resolutions does not provide the self-awareness and gradual development that creates positive change.

I think any time is a good time to begin. And that it’s best to start immediately to create your own positive change, rather than to depend on something that looks like a good beginning.
