Emma Shi was born in Auckland, New Zealand. She then moved to Wellington, where she completed her Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in Classical Studies at Victoria University of Wellington.
Emma was the winner of the National Schools Poetry Award 2013 and the Poetry NZ Prize 2017. Her work was also included in Best New Zealand Poems 2017 and 2023. Emma has been published in various literary journals such as Landfall and Starling.
Emma was previously an Editorial Assistant at a fine line magazine, and has written reviews of poetry books and literary events for the Booksellers NZ Blog. She now edits her own poetry zine, featuring articles and essays on poetry form and breaking the form, called Lemon Juice.
