Emma Shi was born in Auckland, New Zealand. She then moved to Wellington, where she completed her Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in Classical Studies at Victoria University of Wellington.
Emma was the winner of the National Schools Poetry Award 2013 and the Poetry NZ Prize 2017. Her work was also included in Best New Zealand Poems 2017. Emma has been published in various literary journals such as Landfall and Starling. She self-published her own chapbook, titled Elsewhere, which explores homesickness and wanderlust through the women of ancient Greek tragedy. She has also self-published a picture book for children called The Adventures of Moonbear.
Emma was previously an Editorial Assistant at a fine line magazine, and has written reviews of poetry books and literary events for the Booksellers NZ Blog. She now edits her zine on poetry form and breaking the form, Lemon Juice.
